The College of Education and External Studies is the 3rd best performing College in the University of Nairobi. The College Principal, Prof. Isaac Jumba received a certificate of performance under Colleges category during the Performance Contract award ceremony for the year 2019/2020 held on Friday, January 29, 2021 at Taifa Hall. The University has 6 Colleges offering various academic programs; in the College ranking category, the College of Biological and Physical Sciences emerged best followed by College of Architecture and Engineering and College of Education and External Studies was third.
Prof. Margaret Hutchinson; Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance, Planning & Development) gave a detailed account of Performance Contracting (PC) in Kenya stating the various challenges when performance contracting was first introduced in Kenya in the early 1990s. The University of Nairobi adopted PC in 2005/2006; to date, the University continues to use it as a tool to measure performance at all core levels. Prof. Hutchinson further stated; “The Performance contracting is a management tool for measuring performance against negotiated performance targets. These PCs are freely negotiated between parties within the institution.” Over the years, the University has successfully institutionalized a performance –oriented culture and continues to measure and evaluate performance of individual managers as well as collectively as an institution. In conclusion, Prof. Hutchinson called on every staff member to work toward attaining the set targets to improve efficiency and service delivery.
Addressing the audience; The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kiama noted the critical role Performance contracting plays in boosting the morale and tempo of the staff to work toward achieving the goals they have committed to achieve. Prof. Kiama urged all units that had ranked poorly to work together to achieve all set targets.
The event was attended a live audience comprising mainly the University Senate, The University Executive Board, Student leaders and staff of the Transformation, Performance Management and Reform Unit headed by Dr. Grace Kiringa. Other members of staff followed the livestream online. Performance contracting has been very useful to the University University and management is remains committed to the PC process inline with the government directives.
