Every year; the University of Nairobi joins the world in Observing the International World Aids Day. This year, Staff and students from the College of Education and External Studies participated in the various activities organized by the university to mark the World AIDS Day on Friday; November 29, 2019 under the theme: Communities makes the difference.
During the event; the University fraternity participated in a street match from Main Campus to the graduation Square, aerobics and yoga, Fun game activities, testimonials from people in recovery and speeches by the University management. In addition, the University set up a wellness village to provide HIV testing services, Breast, Cervical and Prostrate cancer screening, eye checkup and Reproductive health services.
The official opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, University of Nairobi Chancellor. Dr. Rattansi highlighted the various research activities the University of Nairobi has implemented to ensure the community at large has a broader understanding of the HIV pandemic. The chancellor further reassured participants of the University’s commitment to further HIV research and offer support services to those in most need.
Prof. Isaac Mbeche, the University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor, noted that the University is better positioned to work with professionals across the globe in the research to help those affected by HIV-AIDS. In his speech, the Vice Chancellor pointed out the services the University Health Services offers to both staff and students to support those infected and affected by HIV/AIDs. . University of Nairobi offers HIV – AIDS counselling and testing services, male circumcision, pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis among other services.
The event was sponsored by Haco Industries, Capital FM and organized by University Health Services headed by Dr. Doreen Asimba, Ag. Chief Medical Officer.
