Overview
The Bachelor of Education (Arts) Degree Programme is intended to prepare teachers for secondary schools. However, it is also suitable for people who are involved in educational management and training in the tertiary institutions both in the public and private sectors. In addition, some subject combinations provide competency in Economic Planning, Business and Financial Management as well as Accounting Practices. Students who go through the programme can also become trainers in tertiary institutions as well as institutions of higher learning.
Philosophy of the Programme
The programme focuses on producing graduates who effectively teach and provide leadership in secondary schools and other tertiary institutions in a technologically oriented society. The programme underscores that secondary school education forms the foundation stage for the development of the learner's mind and career choices.
Objectives
By the end of the programme, learners should be able to:-
1 Acquire knowledge that is relevant to secondary school teaching, supervision and management.
2. Acquire skills and other competencies that facilitate effective teaching and learning.
3. Exhibit attitudes that are appropriate to the teaching profession
4. Explore issues and trends in the development of secondary and teacher education
5. Design and carry out research in education related fields.
6. Acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to make a positive contribution to the education sector.
7. Acquire skills, knowledge and attitudes to improve living standards for socio-economic development.
8. Develop competencies that will enable them to be productive in their chosen careers.
9. Acquire 1knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them to become competent trainers at tertiary institutions as well as Institutions of higher learning in the public and private sectors.
10. Gain a proper foundation that will enable them to pursue further studies in education related disciplines

Structure
- The course leading to the award of the Bachelor of Education (Arts) shall extend over a period not exceeding eight (8) semesters of fifteen weeks each.
- A candidate registering for the Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree shall be required to combine a major and a minor teaching subject in the service faculties. See the tabulation;
- All units shall be examined in the semester in which they are taken. Such examinations shall comprise continuous assessment tests and end of semester examinations.
- A candidate shall not be allowed to sit University Examinations unless they have taken and submitted all continuous assessment tests and end of the semester examinations.
- All examinations shall be governed by the following rules:
- End of semester examinations shall constitute 70% and continuous assessment tests 30% of the marks in each unit taken.
- The pass mark in each unit shall be 40%
- A candidate who fails to attain the pass mark on the approval of Board of examiners and senate shall be allowed to resit examination in those units within three months of the ordinary examination. Such a candidate shall be required to resit any of the failed units for a maximum of two attempts.
- A candidate who shall have missed to do a paper at the end of semester examinations out of good cause shall be allowed to resit that paper at the next end of semester examinations.
- A candidate who fails to attain a pass mark in seven or eight units taken in an ordinary examination, shall on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners and approval of Senate repeat the year.
- A candidate who fails in a unit(s) after a resit shall be required to take the same course and examinations in the subsequent semesters.
- A candidate who fails to attain the pass mark in nine or more units taken in any year shall be discontinued.
- A candidate who fails a prerequisite unit shall be required to pass the unit before he/she can be allowed to take the subsequent units to which the failed units form a basic preparatory course.
- A candidate who will not have passed the prescribed 55 units in 8 academic years from the time of entering the programme shall be discontinued.
- A candidate who has repeated the third and fourth year of study shall be eligible for pass degree only.
MODE OF DELIVERY
Mode of delivery
The programme shall be offered through Face-to-Face teaching mode, Open Distance and eLearning (ODeL) mode in a blended manner as follows;
Face-to-face mode
The programme shall be conducted through lectures, group discussion, seminars, tutorials, case studies, student-lecturer consultations, supervised independent study, group projects, practicals, demonstrations and e-learning services.
Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) mode
The programme shall be offered by Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) mode. This shall include self-instructional print and electronic study materials and online lectures, seminars and tutorials
Registration of courses
Learners will register for education courses in the following areas;
- Psychology
- Curriculum and planning
- Education Communication Technology
- Educational Foundations
In addition to education courses, learners shall register their specializations drawn from the following areas;
- Geography and Environmental Studies
- History and Government
- Philosophy and Religious Studies
- Literature in English
- Linguistics
- Kiswahili
- Political Science and Public Administration
- Chinese Language
- Economics
- Business Studies
- Mathematics
- Physical Education and Sport

Admission Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- The common regulations for the Bachelor’s degree in the University of Nairobi shall be applicable.
- The following shall be admissible into the Bachelor of Education (Arts) programme:
- Holders of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum aggregate performance of C+, or equivalent.
- Holders of Diploma from University of Nairobi or other recognized institutions and an aggregate of C in KCSE or equivalent.
- Holders of Mean Grade C- or equivalent plus a certificate and Diploma from a recognized institution.
- Holders of ‘O’ Level Division II or equivalent plus a Diploma from a recognized institution.
- Holders of ‘O’ Level Division III or equivalent Plus a Certificate and Diploma from a recognized Institution.
- Holders of ‘O’ Level Division III or equivalent plus a three year Diploma from a recognized secondary institution.
- Holders of A Level with two Principal passes or equivalent in relevant subjects.
- Holders of a P1 certificate from a two-year post secondary training institution recognized by Senate.
- Holders of a Higher National Diploma in relevant fields and should have attained an aggregate of C in KCSE.
- Holders of a Degree certificate from a recognized University Equivalent qualifications to the above from institutions recognized by Senate
- Applications shall be submitted to the Admissions office through the University of Nairobi online application portal: http://applications.uonbi.ac.ke
CREDIT TRANSFER AND EXEMPTIONS
The exemption and credit transfers shall be governed by the regulations of the University of Nairobi.
The criteria for admission are flexible in terms of credit transfers and exemptions, depending on the applicant’s qualifications. The procedure for seeking credit transfer or exemptions is as follows:-
1. A candidate shall be required to send a formal application to the Academic Registrar, using prescribed forms and attaching evidence of the credentials, which would support the request.
2. A candidate may be required to sit the University ordinary examinations set and administered by respective departments under the authority of the Faculty of Education and the results approved by the Senate.
3. No exemption shall be allowed in professional competency courses such as Teaching Methods, Educational Technology and Teaching Practice.
4. The Faculty shall charge Exemption/Credit transfer fee approved by the School Board. Such a fee shall be subject to review over a period of time.
5. The course on which exemption is sought shall not exceed one-third (1/3) of the total units for the relevant degree programme
