Master in Distance Education

Overview

The Master in Distance Education programme is intended to equip students with modern skills that enables them to leverage on digital technologies in teaching, management of educational institutions, and policy development in education.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the programme is based on the need to increase access to quality education by utilizing innovative approaches and technologies through grounding open and distance education design structures. This intended to remove barriers of access, quality and equity to education, thus responding to the demands of education as stipulated in the Kenya Constitution 2010 and Vision 2030, Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Quality Education, Agenda 2063 and other national and international frameworks.

The programme is designed to build capacity in the field of Online, Open, and Distance Education and produces leaders and practitioners needed to leverage on digital technologies to accelerate and bridge the gap in access to quality education. The programme is anchored on theories of open and distance learning with an outlook to current global trends.

RATIONALE

The world stands on the brink of a technological revolution that is altering the way we live, work, and relate to one another in a fundamental way. The programme is designed to help teachers, lecturers, administrators, managers, e-learning designers, trainers and anyone else with an interest in education to understand and apply open, distance, media and digital technologies in teaching and learning. Graduates of the Master in Distance Education programme are expected to enhance access to quality education by leveraging on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and other emerging innovations to meet the needs of tomorrow’s students.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the Master in Distance Education is to produce well-grounded graduates in the field of open, distance and digital education equipped with relevant knowledge and skills to solve educational challenges by leveraging on innovative and transformative technologies.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION

The Master in Distance Education is a 2 year programme that gives students a strong grounding in the distance education discipline. The programme takes a minimum period of four (4) semesters equivalent to 2 academic years and a maximum of ten (10) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each equivalent to 5 academic years.

The course comprises course work, examination and research project. The coursework consists of eleven (11) core course units, and one (1) elective course units and the department reserves the right to decide the elective to offer in any academic year.

MODE OF DELIVERY

The programme is offered using blended learning mode of delivery which combines face-to-face learning and online learning approaches. The face-to-face learning include lectures, lecture discussions, class presentations, seminars, tutorials, case studies, student-teacher consultations, group projects, guest speakers  and supervised research project. The online teaching and learning is offered using both synchronous and asynchronous modes of learning that include self-instructional print material and electronic courseware.

APPLICANTS WITH FOREIGN QUALIFICATIONS

Secondary and High School Holders of none KCSE Certificate with the exception of IGCSE and GCE and Uganda ‘O” and “A” levels are required to provide equation for their certificates. The equation is done by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC). Diploma and university degree Holders of foreign certificates are required to provide equation for their certificates and qualifications. The equation is done by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

Once an applicant receives the KNEC and/or the CUE Equation certificate, it should be uploaded to the application portal.

MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An eligible applicant must be a holder of:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Honours Upper Division from the University of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification from other institutions recognized by Senate   
  2. A Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Honours Lower Division from the University of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification from other institutions recognized by Senate with two (2) years relevant post-qualification working experience
  3. A Bachelor’s degree with at least a Pass from the University of Nairobi or an equivalent qualification from other institutions recognized by Senate with a Postgraduate Diploma or with five years relevant working experience

CREDIT TRANSFER AND EXEMPTIONS

A student may be allowed credit transfer for up to one-third of the course units provided that such courses were completed at Masters Level in institutions recognized by the Senate.

Applicants seeking transfer of credits shall send a formal application to the Academic Registrar through the Dean, Faculty of Education with justification for the request and evidence of credentials to support the request attached.  For the application to be considered, applicants should pay the prescribed fees for the transfer of credits.

CAREER PROSPECTS/OPPORTUNITY

The Master in Distance Education programme trains graduates who wish to pursue a professional career in distance education. Graduates of the programme have a wide range of career prospects within the education sector in the government and private sector including monitoring and evaluation of education and social sector, undertake research for organizations including central and county governments, NGOs, Consultants among other sectors.  They are also well-equipped to pursue doctoral-level work and many have been absorbed as lecturers in a number of universities in Kenya.
