POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (PGDE)

Overview

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of this programme is guided by the need to inspire those Kenyans who join the teaching profession before they have received the necessary training which is a requirement by the governments for one to be an effective secondary school teacher, college tutor or instructor or work in other higher education institutions, to provide leadership and stewardship in the education sector and to give hope and faith to the trained educationists to excel in whatever educational activities they choose to do with passion, moral responsibility and a strong sense of patriotism.

RATIONALE

The programme offers specialization in Education at Bachelors, Postgraduate Diploma and Doctoral levels. This is to equip teachers and other educators with relevant skills to teach and manage education at various levels. The programme is in the broad field of education as specified in the International Standard Classification of Education Fields of Education and Training (ISCED – F 2013). The specific detailed field is Teacher Training with subject specialization.

The programme enables the graduates who had pursued other courses to pursue a professional career in education. This training is necessitated by the fact that a large number of graduates join the teaching profession before they have received the necessary training which is required by most governments for one to be an effective secondary school teacher, college tutor or instructor or work in other higher education units. The course has and will help prepare graduate teachers, tutors, lecturers and education managers at different levels.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the programme, the learner should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of a diverse range of national education issues including current and emerging trends.
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking and skills concerning theory and practice of education.
  3. Employ knowledge in curriculum design, development, implementation and evaluation.
  4. Integrate skills including ICT skills to teach the current generation of learners.
  5. Prepare would-be teachers, researchers and other personnel to lead, manage, administer, and supervise education programmes as well as to serve as policy formulators, implementers, and change agents.

COURSE DURATION: One (1) year

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme consists of coursework, examination, teaching practice and a Research Project. These shall be covered in a minimum of two (2) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each and a maximum of four (4) semesters. The maximum duration may only be extended with prior approval by Senate.

The students will take seventeen (17) compulsory course units, two (2) electives, Teaching Practice and a Research Project.

The Research Projectis done in the final semester and the topic for the Research Projectis identified by the candidate in consultation with their supervisors, subject to the approval of the department.

 

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-to-Face Mode

Lectures, seminars, discussions, tutorials, guided practical experiments and demonstrations.

Open, Distance and E-Learning Mode

Home and/ or office-based media using a variety of self-instructional electronic and online self-study materials, such as; written self-instructional study modules, online interactive devices and self-tests, cloud-based content, videos of lectures mediated technical learning materials e.g. audiovisual and e-learning materials

Blended Learning Mode

A combination of face-to-face and online learning approaches.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Admission Requirements

The following shall be eligible for admission:  

  1. A Holder of the degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) of Second Class Honours Lower Division of the University of Nairobi or equivalent qualification from any other university recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
  2. A holder of the degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Pass of the University of Nairobi or equivalent qualifications from any other university recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate and two years of working experience.
  3. The applicant must have at least two teaching subjects done at an undergraduate level from a University recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.

Credit Transfers and Exemptions

A student shall be allowed to transfer or seek exemption for up to a maximum of one-third of the total taught courses if the candidate had attended and passed in a similar programme in another institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.

 

Applicants seeking transfer of credits shall:

  1. Send a formal application to the Academic Registrar through the Dean of Faculty, seeking transfer of credits. Justification of request and evidence of credentials that would support such request shall be attached to the application.    
  2. Pay the prescribed fees for the transfer of credits before the application is processed.
  3. Grades for transferred courses shall be entered in the candidate’s transcripts while the exempted courses shall be entered as “exempt”.
