The University of Nairobi Student Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 8, 2026, celebrates the resilience, leadership, and academic excellence of its student body. The event brought together university leadership, faculty, and donors in a powerful affirmation of the institution’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates. For the Faculty of Education, the ceremony served as a significant milestone, highlighting the critical role of educators in shaping the future of society.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Margaret J. Hutchinson praised the recipients for their discipline and commitment to excellence. She emphasized that while monetary rewards and certificates are valuable, the true essence of the awards lies in the affirmation of merit and purpose. Prof. Hutchinson thanked the faculty and staff for their dedication to shaping students beyond the classroom and urged the awardees to lead with integrity as they transition into their professional careers.
Welcoming the attendees, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Prof. Ayub Gitau described the occasion as a celebration that transcends traditional academic achievement, honoring diverse talents in creativity, volunteerism, and service. He particularly noted the University’s strategic shift toward the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework, which will provide specialized pathways in the social sciences and STEM disciplines starting in 2029. This transition underscores the Faculty of Education's vital mission to prepare the next generation of teachers and administrators for an evolving curriculum.
Support for these future educators was bolstered by the generosity of sponsors who recognize the transformative power of teaching. Prof. Alfred Buregeya, Chair, Department of Linguistics and Languages, and Prof. Ann Aseey contributed significantly as sponsors, reinforcing the bond between faculty leadership and student achievement. Their support was part of a larger collective effort involving 108 donors who contributed over Ksh. 2,654,500 in prizes to recognize 736 students across the University’s ten faculties.
The spirit of mentorship and departmental leadership was palpable as key figures from the Faculty were recognized for their dedication to student success. Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Jeremiah Kalai, stood alongside the Associate Dean of the Kenya Science Campus to witness the fruits of their administrative and academic guidance. The ceremony also highlighted the contributions of various department heads, including Prof. Susan Yego, Chair of the Department of Educational Management, Policy and Curriculum Studies; Prof. Daniel Gakunga, Chair of the Department of Educational Foundations; and Prof. Ann Aseey, Chair of the Department of Educational and Distance Studies.
Valedictorian Joy Muthoni Mwaniki offered a poignant reminder to her fellow peers that achievement requires sacrifice and consistency. She encouraged the future educators to build strong professional networks and remain courageous as they create their own paths in the global landscape. As the ceremony concluded, the students from the Faculty of Education left inspired to serve as ambassadors of excellence, ready to innovate and lead in classrooms and administrative offices across the nation.
