The University of Nairobi is hosting a series of webinars to mark 50 years anniversary. On December 3, 2020; The Department of Physical Education and Sport invited Professor Seija Karppinnen, from the faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki, Finland to speak at a webinar titled “Boosting 21st Century skills- Invention pedagogy and Collaboration.
The Webinar was moderated by Prof. Genevieve Wanjala who set the stage by giving a detailed breakdown of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) that the government of Kenya is currently implementing. The College of Education and External Studies will play a critical role in preparing future teachers who will implement the CBC as expected. During her presentation; Prof. Wanjala further stated that the CBC is designed to emphasize the significance of not only developing skills and knowledge but also applying competencies acquired in school, to real-life situations. Prof. Seija gave a detailed presentation on the Successes and Challenges of the Finland Education system. Her presentation mainly highlighted how the country has managed to build a culture of collaboration and innovation to nurture the skills the learners will need in an ever-changing society and labor market. Prof. Seija also highlighted the 3 guiding principles of Co-creating, co-teaching, and co-learning that have contributed immensely to the success of the Finland Education System.
