Nairobi, March 17, 2026

The University of Nairobi, in collaboration with Leiden University and University of Ghana. Successfully hosted a transformative Learning Mindset workshop series on 17 March 2026, aimed at advancing innovative, research-driven teaching and learning in higher education. Held at the University of Nairobi Towers (MLT 401), the workshops brought together faculty, early-career researchers, and students in an interactive, experiential learning environment focused on collaboration, innovation, and evidence-based pedagogy. The programme was presided over by Prof. Susan Chepkonga on behalf of the Dean FED, Prof. Jeremiah Kalai, with academic and learning mindset leadership provided by Prof. Dorothy Kyalo. The initiative was successfully organized by Prof. Angeline Mulwa and Dr. Agnes Anyango Andollo, with support from Dr. M. Mbathi.

The morning session for staff introduced the €1,500 Small Research Grants, equipping educators and researchers with practical skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating innovative teaching practices with measurable learning outcomes. The afternoon workshop focused on student empowerment through practical strategies including autonomous learning, taking charge of learning, game-based learning, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in education. Facilitated by an international team including Dr. Caroline Archambault (Leiden University), Esli Verheggen (Leiden University PhD student), and Abigail Ayiglo Kunornu (University of Ghana), the sessions emphasized hands-on participation, collaborative problem-solving, and digital tool application, enabling participants to translate theory into practice and explore innovative pedagogical approaches.

The event concluded with a consultative meeting between the Learning Mindset team and the University of Nairobi Small Grant Committee, alongside a campus tour, reinforcing ongoing institutional collaboration and future implementation plans. The University also acknowledges the support of the Corporate Affairs Office, Director, Mr. John Orindi, for enhancing the visibility, communication, and coordination of the event.

The University of Nairobi commends all faculty early-career researchers, and students who actively participated in the workshops. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and commitment to innovation reflect the University’s dedication to global partnerships, interdisciplinary collaboration, and transformative, future-oriented higher education systems. By integrating research, innovation, and student-centered approaches, the University continues to empower both educators and learners to thrive in an increasingly dynamic academic and digital landscape.
